Return of the Mac (again)

Thursday, October 31st, 2002

Woo-hoo.

Without warning, an extra brown box showed up sometime when I was away for lunch. Inside, my Mac was sitting there with a work repair order saying that they fixed things. Sure enough, they replaced the LCD, backlight, and something called an "inverter" (not sure, but maybe it is to illuminate the glowing Apple logo on the back).

What does this all mean? Well, my laptop is back, I don’t have tons of dead pixels, and I can see what’s going on once more. Pretty nifty.

Hopefully I won’t have to send it off yet again. I think I’m going to spring for that AppleCare extended warranty.

Can’t sleep: Theme fun!

Thursday, October 31st, 2002

…So I found some interesting things while surfing around (as usual).

BluecurveTM, the new theme I designed for Red Hat, is available for GTK+ 1 and 2, Metacity, KWin, Qt, XMMS, GDM, icons, and other various parts of the Red Hat 8.0 system.

Maybe the next step is to make Bluecuve available for other things as well, such as this list of theme-able software:

If I really wanted to, I could also think about making a theme for Windows 3.1. *shudder*

Okay, I am really up too late tonight, so it’s past time to go to sleep and have nice dreams. Hopefully I won’t have theme nightmares! (:

Sour Apple

Thursday, October 31st, 2002

My new laptop is still off in Apple-la-la Land. I still haven’t heard anything about it, nor has it made its way back to me. It has been a week now. This is the second time I had it shipped off. The first time, I had them fix several problems already.

In the mean time, here’s an interesting page: "Why most people should buy a Macintosh"A quote of the list on that page is below (my comments are in [brackets]):

  • are much easier to set up […when things work right]
  • are (still) easier to use [more-or-less]
  • have a graphic user interface which is more customisable [Apple has been locking down as much as they have been able to lately]
  • are more stable and break down less often [If my laptop is any indication… eek.]
  • are easier to fix when they do break down [If this was true, I wouldn’t have had to necessarily ship it off and wait a while — there might have been someone in town to repair it or I would have at least been able to swap out parts if it was a part that was easily able to be swapped out]
  • have plenty of software available [this is true — including Illustrator among others]
  • are (virtually) free of viruses [just like Linux! *smile*]
  • are cheaper to buy and maintain!! [not really true]

Despite the laptop’s shortcomings, it is prety nice, and I would like it back soon. Right now I’m using my loud, slow IBM laptop that drains batteries in around an hour or so. Luckily, I have a power supply handy.

Past few days…

Thursday, October 31st, 2002

I’ve been in meetings for most of the week so far. Actually, the whole thing was put together impressively well.

For the past few days, I’ve also been hanging out with Blizzard, the Mozilla wrangler and the Nautilus-hacking Alex from Red Hat a bit while each visited the city. We talked about Mozilla, Nautilus, and other mostly-work-related topics. It was a bit fun when at dinner, there was a point where computers and computer-related things were not mentioned for several contiguous minutes on end!

I also worked on Red Hat Network stuff and worked on theme updates for the base OS in between meetings, here-and-there.

This past evening, one of my non-work friends in the area (Allea) sang two songs (one by Waterdeep and the other written by Lifehouse) — and she sang both great.

Anyway, those are just a few of the highlights of what has been going on this week. (:

Fall Tour 2002: I went, I saw, I took some pictures

Tuesday, October 22nd, 2002

I made it back to Raleigh safe and sound.

Bad news: Everything malfunctioned. My camera was giving me errors ("Error 01"), my cell phone stopped working for a number of days (and when it did work, I was on a super-expensive roam), my new laptop‘s backlight for the display died so I could not see anything on the screen (still that way too — I have to send it in yet again, as I have already sent it in and it got the motherboard and other parts replaced — it was supposed to get the screen replaced last time too, but they failed to fix that despite the dozen or so bad pixels — maybe the screen will be replaced this time. Sigh; more time without my laptop…), and my car also had multiple issues (ran out of windshield wiper fluid, it mysteriously reported that a bulb went out (and I couldn’t find out which one), then "another" bulb went out (but I can now see that the "second" one is actually the front headlight), and the service light came on (which is a pre-programmed light to remind me to take it in to the dealer for a check-up… maybe I can take it in and they can fix all the before mentioned anyway… heh)).

Good news: I managed to take time off, see a lot of things, travel to many places north of here (including Canada), meet up with a lot of cool people (lots of people including ravskel and x-virge in Pittsburg; Nat, Miguel, Duncan, Dobey, Amy, Ben, and many others (mostly Ximian people) in Boston, and mmarker in Amherst), and take a lot of good pictures (which I will post soon). (:

Even better news: I made it back safe. (:

On the road again…

Tuesday, October 15th, 2002

I’m currently on vacation. I left town on Saturday and Will be back sometime next weekend. I have my camera with me, of course, so you can expect some really cool pictures soon. I have already taken quite a few interesting ones.

I’m currently visiting Stan (aka "ravskel") up in Pittsburgh. Julian (aka "x-virge") is also in the area, so I think we’ll hang out for a bit later on today too.

In other news, last night, I uploaded a new photo set — Sunset at Duke Gardens. It contains many photos from Duke Gardens from one evening, at sunset (go figure).

So, I guess I’ll get back on the road soon enough.
