To celebrate this evening’s Hurricanes hockey game, tropical storm Kyle is currently dumping down tons of rain.

The streets are flooded, the sky is overcast, and there are waterfalls outside of work.

Diving for photos

Friday, October 11th, 2002

Diving anytime soon? The DX-30/60 housing for Canon’s D60 (or D30) looks like it would be ultra-cool.

Mmmmm. Underwater photos.

Fall colors

Friday, October 11th, 2002

Judging from the way things look now, next week will be prime for viewing the yearly autumnal color changing foliage. The question, then, is where to go to see the multi-colored leaves? I think the answer is "north", somewhere.

Red Hat Linux 8.0 interview

Wednesday, October 9th, 2002 has an interview with Owen and Havoc about the Red Hat Linux 8.0 release.

The article covers things like X, fonts, GTK+ and Qt, Gnome and KDE, and a bunch of desktop-related things. I’m even mentioned a few times. It’s interesting reading.

Block those pop-ups with Mozilla

Monday, October 7th, 2002

Mozilla has a feature that allows one to block pop-ups, those annoying little windows that appear when you’re surfing around. To enable this feature in a 1.0 or 1.1 build (and also in Netscape 7, I think…), you should go to the preferences area. On Linux and Windows, it’s under the "Edit" menu, as "Preferences". On Mac OS X, it is located under the menu called "Mozilla", and then — you guessed it — "Preferences".

Wow. Lots of preferences, right? To find the ones you want to toggle, click on the expander in front of "Advanced" on the left area of the window (it’s near the bottom of that list on the left). See where it says "Scripts and Plugins"? Click on it.

Now the right area changes. You will see a ton of checkboxes. Inside the box that is labeled "Allow scripts to:", uncheck all of those options, except for the bottom three. The first one in that list is actually the one you want to turn off, but the rest don’t hurt at all (as those are also responsible for very annoying Javascript when you’re surfing around. The bottom three are actually useful, as it enables image rollovers and cookies (which are required for many sites to function).

Enjoy a pop-up free browsing experience!

Photos: Triangle Metro Zoo & Neuse Falls

Sunday, October 6th, 2002

I took a lot of pictures yesterday. They’re available for viewing in my photo area.

You can see a bit of the autumnal colors starting to show up in the Falls photos. I’m planning on taking more pics once a bit more colors appear.

Here are a few of my favorites out of the bunch:

Enjoy the pics. Post a comment.

Google perplexed

Saturday, October 5th, 2002

Wired has a story about Google’s results getting an unintentional downgrade (more info). I noticed this a week or so ago. Now, a "garrett" search places me on the second page instead of listing me as the top result for Garrett.

Please link my website with "Garrett" as the text. Maybe we could fix up the results. (:
