Etymology for turkeys

Thursday, December 12th, 2002

Ever wondered where the word "Turkey" came from? What’s the relation between the Thanksgiving bird and the country half-way around the world from the United States? If you’re wondering, check out an article on the history of the word "turkey".

My favorite part was the last few paragraphs. Great stuff.

Have power, no ‘Net

Saturday, December 7th, 2002

Well, I guess I’m lucky in the fact that I have power at home once again (for now again at least — it has been off and on repeatedly), but I do not have any Internet access. I have a cable modem and it seems as though the cable is out throughout the entire area in which I live.

I’m posting this from work, just in case you’re wondering… (:

I also have a bunch of really cool photos from yesterday (that’s in addition to the ones I have already uploaded and posted from the day before) that are currently at home on a hard drive, just waiting to be uploaded. I’ll get those up as soon as possible.

Photos: Ice Storm

I finally found enough continuous power to upload the photographs I took yesterday. I’m thankful that Red Hat has more than sufficient power in the office. Anyway, be sure to check out the Ice Storm.

Enjoy the pictures!

Winter ice storm

Thursday, December 5th, 2002

Wow. There was a lot of ice and freezing rain last night after the snow. There has been mass chaos in the area and there are well over a million people around here without power. Yes, I’m one of them (as well as most of the people here at Red Hat)… I lost electricity last night and the power is still off.

I layered up this morning and walked to work since my car was covered in a few inches of solid ice. On the way out of my door, I snagged my camera and will post the pictures I took soon (probably today). There were tons of trees suspended by power lines and lying all over the roads and all the traffic lights are out.

Everyone in the area will most definately be keeping an eye on the weather.

It snowed here in Raleigh today. Everyone left the office early as a result (mostly to avoid accidents on the roadway).

Since it was a "wintry mix", there was also sleet and ice here and there. A visible amount of snow stuck to the ground and there are currently snow drifts outside.

Photos: Morning After Thanksgiving

Wednesday, December 4th, 2002

On the morning after Thanksgiving, my dad and I ventured out into the outer reaches of the Savannah area as we travelled towards Tybee Island. As the sun came up, I took a small amount of pictures in a spooky Savannah graveyard (the first angel picture is quite neat, as the sun shone right at a perfect place).

As we continued down the road, we stopped short of Tybee to take a few more photographs.

It was still morning at Tybee Island when we arrived at the beach. I managed to take a lot of good pictures the entire morning, and many of them reside in this last set.

Enjoy the pictures! (:

Photos: State Fair

Monday, December 2nd, 2002

I recently visited the state fair. There was lots of food (cakes and big stuff) as well as friendly fair animals. The foggy fair evening ended with a bang (fireworks).

Enjoy all the photo sets linked above (each hyperlink is a different set of images).
