Winter weather beginnings

Sunday, December 3rd, 2006

For us residents of the Boston metro area (as well as many other parts of New England), the first snowfall of the season is about to begin tonight!

Here’s hoping that the wintery season is quick and mostly harmless this year! We’ve been off to a great start thus far, with all the jacketless days over the past several weeks.

Unpausing my ‘blog

So many things happened since my last post…

On a side note, it’s kind of hard to start blogging again when you haven’t done so in a while.

Our recent nor’easter

Monday, February 13th, 2006

Snow fell all Sunday, leaving the Boston area under at least 17.5 inches of the powdery stuff (according to a swiftly disappearing page on weather.gov). With the help of wind, snow drifts may be taller than the official reading.

Since we woke up with lots of snow at our doors (and our doors open inward), we remained inside all day long to watch the fluffy flakes fall. All the shops were closed and none of the snow was cleared away during any of the daylight hours, so venturing out would have only gotten us cold and covered in snow.

It was exciting to watch the blizzard-like conditions through the windows of a warm room, but after a while we wondered when it would end. A few hours later, at sunset, an amazing purple glow from the sky permeated everything outside. I would have a picture to post here, but my tripod (necessary for the low light) was inacessible in the trunk of my car, due to the snow covering both my car and the walkways to it.

Near seven o’clock, the snowfall event tapered off. Shortly after, people from around the neighborhood ventured outside to scoop the white stuff off of the sidewalks and driveways while we ate our dinner and watched.

I enjoyed staying at home, cooking things like a spinach and wild mushroom pasta dish and brussels sprouts (the proper, tasty way) on this Sunday snow day. Not much else was accomplished, but parts of the day seemed surreal.

Things change overnight

Monday, January 23rd, 2006

Last night, I went to bed and it was an ordinary Sunday night. This morning, when I woke up, there was a bunch of snow outside — and snow is steadily falling still. It’s a little hard to believe that I was actually in short sleeves this past weekend.

I think I’ll take my camera with me to work today…

First snow of the year in Boston

Saturday, October 29th, 2005

Up here in the Boston area, we got our first snowfall of the season. It started this morning with the largest flakes I’ve seen, and it has been continuing all throughout the day, causing nearly everything to be covered in white. The snowfall will continue throughout the night, according to several weather websites, although it should clear by sometime tomorrow. We’ll have to see how long it lingers — but for now, we’re enjoying the scenic winterland from inside, cozy and warm, sitting next to the fireplace.

When will the winter end?

We had yet another cold day in New England. Here in Cambridge, it even snowed!

Making the most of cold weather

Friday, February 25th, 2005

Some people make the most of cold weather by taking advantage of the freezing temperatures… then go climbing.

It’s a neat concept illustrated by some nice photos, and it looks like fun.

Meanwhile, we just got another big blanket of snow up here in Massachusetts. Brr.
